Medaka Oryzias latipes as a model for hypoosmoregulation of euryhaline fishes

چکیده
Ž . We examined the hypoosmoregulatory ability of a model fish, medaka Oryzias latipes , in Ž . relation to the gill-chloride cells or mitochondrion-rich MR cells, and to cortisol. When the Ž . Ž . medaka were transferred from freshwater FW to 30‰ seawater SW , muscle water content decreased by 8% after 2 h and normalized within 1 week. Size and density of MR cells in the gill Ž filament increased after 1–2 weeks in SW. Immersion of medaka in FW containing cortisol 10 . mgrml for 1–2 weeks also doubled the number of MR cells, and abolished the decrease in Ž muscle water content after SW transfer. In SW-adapted medaka, prolactin PRL; 10 mgrg body . Ž . weight injection reduced muscle water content. However, when cortisol 50 mgrg was injected simultaneously with PRL, cortisol abolished the decrease in muscle water. We concluded that cortisol plays an important role in the SW adaptation of the medaka, whereas PRL may be involved in ion uptake. Medaka seems to be a good model fish useful for the study of osmoregulatory mechanisms in general. q 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Expression Profiles of Branchial FXYD Proteins in the Brackish Medaka Oryzias dancena: A Potential Saltwater Fish Model for Studies of Osmoregulation
FXYD proteins are novel regulators of Na(+)-K(+)-ATPase (NKA). In fish subjected to salinity challenges, NKA activity in osmoregulatory organs (e.g., gills) is a primary driving force for the many ion transport systems that act in concert to maintain a stable internal environment. Although teleostean FXYD proteins have been identified and investigated, previous studies focused on only a limited...
متن کاملTransgenic Medaka, Small Fresh Water Teleost (Oryzias latipes), is Now Available for Environmental Science
Recently, small model fish, medaka and zebrafish, have been casted a light on environmental science. Transgenic technique is a method that introduce exogenous gene into host genome and enables to generate unique model creature. Adapting transgenic technique on these fish, they become more powerful tool for evaluating aquatic contamination. Chemical analysis and in vitro bioassay, such as ELISA,...
متن کاملPhylogenetic aspects of tooth and jaw structure of the Medaka, Oryzias latipes, and other beloniform fishes
Tooth structure is described for adult male, female, and juvenile Oryzias latipes (Temminck & Schlegel), the Medaka. Adult males have enlarged, unicuspid teeth posteriorly on the premaxilla and dentary. Oral teeth are smaller and more numerous in females, in which no tooth is notably larger than the others. Juveniles have numerous small teeth from about 3 mm SL (standard length) onwards. By abo...
متن کاملDifferential expression of branchial Na+/K(+)-ATPase of two medaka species, Oryzias latipes and Oryzias dancena, with different salinity tolerances acclimated to fresh water, brackish water and seawater.
Previous studies on non-diadromous euryhaline teleosts introduced a hypothesis that the lowest level of gill Na(+)/K(+)-ATPase (NKA) activity occurs in the environments with salinity close to the primary natural habitats of the studied species. To provide more evidence of the hypothesis, two medaka species, Oryzias latipes and O. dancena, whose primary natural habitats are fresh water (FW) and ...
متن کاملComparative Study of Morpho-histology of Ovaries of Wt (hdrr) and P53 (-/-) of Medaka (oryzias Latipes)
In the present paper comparative study of morpho-histology of ovaries of both WT (HdrR) and P53 (-/-) of medaka (Oryzias latipes) has been done. The ovaries of adult are paired and oval-rounded in shape and are situated ventrolaterally. Histologically the ovaries consist of follicles with various stages of development, such as primodial follicle, large follicle and growing follicle. Also, the o...
